History and Heritage in Southern Alberta

8 Hours | Departing Calgary

Head south from Calgary through the rangelands of Cowboy Country to where the plains meet the foothills. Your destination is Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump (Canadian Signature Experience) , a UNESCO World Heritage Site that tells the story of the hunting practice of the native people of the North American plains for the past 6000 years. A native guide leads you through the exhibit and out to the cliff jump, sharing the history and lifestyle of the first people. There may even be drumming in the plaza. Next, stop at the historic town of Fort Macleod, founded as a Northwest Mounted Police barracks in 1892 and now a quaint place to get a feel for the old west. Return north to Calgary and the fantastic attraction of Heritage Park. Celebrating 50 years in 2014, Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum, taking you back in time to experience the 1860s through the 1950s. Explore Gasoline Alley Museum, chat with costumed characters in the historic village, and thrill to the antique rides like the Whip and the Ferris Wheel. Return to Calgary late afternoon.
